En 1968 Pierre Ducos a décrit une nouvelle sous-espèce d'âne : E. asinus palestinae. Le type est un squelette presque complet provenenant de l'Age du Bronze de Tel Gat en Galilée.

Bien que ce squelette et quelques dents isolées appartiennent très probablement à une forme domestique, leurs dimensions sont à peine inférieures à la moyenne des Anes sauvages. D'autres restes d'Anes domestiques Ikrit, IsraÃ«l probablement du màªme âge, ont des dimensions dentaires voisines mais les os des membres sont beaucoup plus petits (voir les diagrammes de dispersion 1 et 2 des dents jugales supérieures et le diagramme de Simpson des segments de membres).

In 1968 Pierre Ducos described from the Bronze Age of Tel Gat a new subspecies : E. asinus palestinae. The type is an almost complete skeleton.

Although the skeleton and other isolated teeth belong very probably to a domestic donkey their size is only slightly smaller than the size of the average wild ass E. africanus. Other donkey remains Ikrit, IsraÃ«lprobably from the same age, have the same size for the teeth but the limb bones are considerably smaller (see the scatter diagrams of the upper cheek teeth 1 and 2, and of the segments of limbs).

The studied material belongs mostly to the Jerusalem collections (M. Stekelis excavations, 1950-1960) ; a few specimens (Turvelle-Petre excavations, 1931) are preserved at the British Museum (Kebara B, D, E).
Archeological levels were mostly determined thanks to the informations kindly provided by Professors Ofer Bar-Ytosef and Liliane Meignen.
Some fossils were not seen by me but published by Simon Davis (1980) and his data were included in my scatter diagrams of upper cheek teeth.

Upper cheek teeth

The first scatter diagram compares the teeth from Kebara to the teeth of E. hemionus onager. Three species are probably represented at Kebara :
– E. hydruntinus, most teeth,
– E. hemionus onager, two premolars and three molars,
– E. caballus, one molar.

The second scatter diagram is done according to the archeological levels.
– Natufian : a molar may be referred to E. hemionus onager.
– Upper Paleolithic (UP) and limit UP-Mousterian : a molar of E. hydruntinus and two teeth of E. hemionus onager.
– Mousterian : one large molar probably caballine, three teeth of E. hemionus onager, a score of E. hydruntinus teeth.

Lower cheek teeth

– Most may belong to E. hydruntinus.
– Two premolars (Mousterian A2/5 and Upper Paleolithic-Mousterian A2/4 39) probably belong to a Caballine.

Limb bones (see Simpson's ratio diagrams)

Kebara B, Natufian
– A subadult anterior first phalanx belonged to E. hydruntinus. This specimen is slightly smaller than a specimen from Agios Georgios (Macedonia) about 12 Ka old (Bassiakos et Tsoukala, 1996).
– A fragment of MC may also be referred to E. hydruntinus.

Upper Paleolithic (UP) or limit UP-Mousterian
– A very badly preserved (South Terrace) belonged possibly to a Caballine.

Mousterian
– A fragmentary MC (Kebara E), slightly smaller than Quneitra 1035, may be referred to a Caballine ; other MC may be referred to E. hydruntinus.
– A fragmenatry MT (A2/4) may be referred to a Caballine. Two other may be referred to E. hydruntinus.
– An anterior second phalanx (Ph2) belongs to an E. hydruntinus.
– A posterior Ph2 can be referred to E. hemionus onager.

Le matériel que j'ai étudié se trouvait en majeure partie à Jérusalem et provenait des fouilles de M. Stekelis en 1950-1960 ; quelques spécimens provenant des fouilles de Turvelle-Petre en 1931 étaient au British Museum (Kebara B, D, E).

Les niveaux archéologiques de la plupart des fossiles ont été déterminés grâce aux renseignements que m'ont aimablement fourni les Professeurs Ofer Bar-Ytosef et Liliane Meignen.

Une partie du matériel que je n'ai pas examinée a été publiée par Simon Davis (1980) et j'ai utilisé ses données en plus des miennes dans les diagrammes de dispersion des dents jugales supérieures.

Dents jugales supérieures

Le premier diagramme de dispersion compare les jugales supérieures de Kebara à celles d'E.hemionus onager. Il montre la présence probable de trois espèces :
– E. hydruntinus, la plupart des dents,
– E. hemionus onager, deux prémolaires et trois molaires,
– E. caballus, une molaire.

Le second diagramme de dispersion présente les dents en fonction des niveaux archéologiques.
– Natoufien, une molaire supérieure pourrait appartenir à E. hemionus onager.
– Paléolithique supérieur et sa limite avec le Moustérien : une molaire d'E. hydruntinus et deux jugales d'E. hemionus onager.
– Moustérien : une grande molaire probablement caballine, trois jugales d'E. hemionus onager, une vingtaine de jugales d'E. hydruntinus.

Dents jugales inférieures
– La plupart peuvent appartenir à E. hydruntinus.
– Deux prémolaires (Moustérien A2/5 et Moustérien/Paléolithique supérieur A2/4 39) appartiennent sans doute à un Caballin.

Kebara B, Natoufien
– Une première phalange antérieure subadulte appartenait à E. hydruntinus. Elle est un peu plus petite qu'un spécimen de la grotte d'Agios Georgios en Macédoine, vieux d'environ 12 ka (Bassiakos et Tsoukala, 1996).
– Un fragment de MC appartenait aussi à E. hydruntinus.

Paléolithique supérieur ou limite Paléolithique supérieur-Moustérien
– Un MC en mauvais état (South Terrace) appartenait peut-àªtre à un Caballin.

Moustérien
– Un MC fragmentaire (Kebara E), un peu plus petit que celui de Quneitra, appartient sans doute à un Caballin ; les autres MC peuvent àªtre rapportés à E. hydruntinus.
– Un MT fragmentaire (A2/4) peut àªtre rapporté à un Caballin. Deux MT fragmentaires appartiennent sans doute à un E. hydruntinus.
– Une Ph2 antérieure appartient à un E. hydruntinus.
– Une Ph2 postérieure peut àªtre rapportée à E. hemionus onager.
